Asphalt Equipment - Types of Asphalt Pavement
Asphalt Paving
Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA)
The common material used in asphalt paving is called Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) and contains a binder of bitumen which allows it to sustain plastic deformation.
Grading and soil stabilization is important when laying down asphalt. Asphalt is almost always used atop a gravel base of portland cement, or lime. Full Depth asphalt pavements may be built on the native subgrade.
Warm Mix Asphalt
With Warm-mix asphalt the temperature of the material is lowered at mixing and placement on the road. Reductions of 50 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit have been documented. Such drastic reductions would have the obvious benefits of cutting fuel consumption and decreasing the production of greenhouse gases. Lowering the production temperature can drastically reduce the production of emissions. Warm Mix asphalt could be the wave of the future.
Porous asphalt
"Porous asphalt" is mixed at conventional asphalt plants, but fine (small) aggregate is omitted from the mixture. The remaining large, single-sized aggregate particles leave open voids that give the material its porosity and permeability. Under the porous asphalt surface is a base course of further single-sized aggregate. Porous asphalt surfaces are being used on highways to improve driving safety by removing water from the surface.
Glasphalt
Glasphalt which is made from recycling waste glass for use in paving roads and parking lots, is being used to pave an airport runway, parking apron and taxiway.
One of the advantages of glasphalt is that no special equipment is needed, and glass of any color and type from bottles, windows, glass used for baking, and tableware can be used. Glasphalt can be prepared in a commercial asphalt plants and then placed using the same equipment used for laying ordinary asphalt paving.
Advantages include high reflectivity, and the tendency to dry faster after rain. The glass particles do not absorb water as the rock in regular asphalt.
